The Biggest Single Event in my Recovery from Anxiety
- A personal experience
-
The biggest single event in my recovery from anxiety did
not come from some kind of expensive cure for which I was paying £50 an hour.
The turning point came when I was browsing through google, I came across a
series of books and cassettes by a woman called Dr Claire Weekes who died years
ago. As it happened I didn't buy these books. My local library had a copy of
one and I found another in a local second hand book shop. Over hundreds of
pages and hours of reading the books only said one thing. Accept. When you
accept your anxiety it can no longer bother you: anxiety is just fear of
anxiety. I thought it over simplistic, and as my recovery goes on I undertsand
that there is more to it than pure symptomatic relief, but in truth accpeting
anxiety does seem to be the only way to beat it. It also happens to be
effectively free. (Well, a book or two costs nothing compared to a handful of
sessions with "experts".)
Once the cat was out of the bag it should have been easy, but it wasn't. Accepting anxiety is easy in prinicple (after all, it is a completely harmless phenomena that is also completely natural; anxiety can not hurt you) however, anxiety has evolved over millions of years to be extremely unpleasant and uncomfortable. That is it's function, to kick us into action. Learning to accept it, to "float through it" (as Dr Weekes puts it) is hard.
I don't believe in easy cures for anxiety, I have tried many thousands of them and none of them work. The only solutions are the ones you work for, I think you can only beat anxiety when you understand how you are beating it, not have it somehow removed from you by a skilled therapist.
This is where I first read about Dr Claire Weekes unique anxiety solution.
I will update this Blog with other things which I found useful, of the many I have tried. For now, thanks for reading...and please don't waste money on things which promise the earth but never deliver!
