Valium, Xanax, Deiazepam are CNS (Central Nervous System) depressants designed to relieve anxiety.  In the short term they definitely work, but are not cure-alls and you should definitely deal with the underlying issues which are causing anxiety, panic and agoraphobia
I am not a doctor and I do NOT recommend that you alter the dosage or
stop taking any medication proscribed by your doctor without talking to
him or her first. That said, your end goal as an anxiety sufferer is to
lead a normal life without drugs right? If not, and the drugs are keeping
your anxiety, Gad, or Panic Attacks at bay without serious side effects,
why worry? Personally when I used to suffer from anxiety and panic attacks,
and had a whole range of phobias, I looked to the future where I could
rely on myself.

Another thing to discuss with your doctor is the side effects not just
of of the benzodiazepines but also of SSRI’s (selective serotonin re-uptake
inhibitors) or any other drugs for anxiety and panic attacks. Not everyone gets side effects from these drugs but some
do, and it is worth being prepared, without getting too paranoid.

An experience with Xanax from Anonymous in Seattle

“…I got on pretty well with this med. It didn’t make me real drowsy
like some other things I tried. I just felt so normal I thought it wasn’t
working, until I didn’t have any Panic Attacks on the Subway!”
